Pigmentation

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the color of the skin, which is largely dependent on the amount of melanin present. While melanin is crucial for protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation, its overproduction or uneven distribution can lead to various pigmentation concerns.

What are Common Types of Pigmentation?

Freckles

Small concentrated spots of pigmentation, commonly occurring over the upper cheeks.

Can occur in younger people, and is predominantly caused by genetics and sun damage.

Sun Spots or Age Spots

Large, brown spots that develop on sun-exposed areas due to cumulative sun exposure over time.

More common in individuals over the age of 50.

Melasma

Common especially in Asian females, melasma appears as brown or gray-brown patches, often triggered by hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or birth control use.

Hori's Naevi

Blue-gray or brownish spots on the face, commonly affecting both cheekbones.

This has a strong genetic and hormonal influence and can occur or worsen during pregnancy and menopause.
