What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition characterized by the occurrence of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or nodules, often appearing on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. It typically arises when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to inflammation.

What are the Causes of Acne?

Excess oil production: This occurs when too much oil (sebum) is produced, leading to clogged pores. The bacteria Cutibacterium acnes thrive in clogged pores, causing inflammation.
Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, common during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or stress, leading to increased oil production.
Skincare and cosmetics: Comedogenic skincare or makeup formulations may exacerbate acne.
Genetics: Family history can influence one's predisposition to acne.

Types of Acne

Whiteheads (closed comedones): Tiny bumps of sebum trapped under the skin, appearing white or skin coloured due to blocked pores.
Blackheads (open comedones): Similar to whiteheads, but the pore opens up, the sebum oxidizes, therefore turning the top black.
Inflammatory Acne: Red, angry bumps and pus-filled pimples (papules & pustules). Inflammation makes them more red, noticeable and painful.
Nodular & Cystic Acne: Deep, severe blemishes that form under the skin. Nodules are red painful lumps, while cysts are pus-filled lumps. Both tend to scar easily and must be treated early.
Trauma leading to acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Other conditions, such as rosacea, can present very similarly to acne vulgaris.
