What are Dark Underarms?

Dark underarms refer to the discoloration or darkening of the skin at the underarm region, which can affect one’s self confidence when wearing sleeveless clothing.

What are the Causes of Dark Underarms?

Several factors can contribute to underarm hyperpigmentation:

Friction and irritation: Shaving, tight clothing, and harsh deodorants can irritate the delicate underarm skin.
Hormonal fluctuations: Pregnancy, menstruation, and hormonal imbalances can cause melanin overproduction.
Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions can cause skin darkening over the underarms, back of neck and other folds of the skin.
Genetics: At times, this is due to genetics and some individuals are just more susceptible to darkened underarms.

Reasons why You may have dark underarms

Genetics: Some individuals are naturally predisposed to increased melanin production.
Skin type: Darker skin tones are generally more prone to hyperpigmentation.
Certain medications: Some medications can have side effects that include skin darkening.
Body-Mass Index (BMI): Individuals with a higher body mass index (BMI) are more susceptible to darkening of the underarms, and specifically a condition known as Acanthosis nigricans.
Medical conditions: Certain conditions like diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can elevate the risk of underarm darkening.

Tips to Prevent dark underarms

Wearing loose clothing, using gentle shaving techniques to reduce friction to the underarms. Hair removal treatments can also be considered so shaving can be avoided altogether.
Avoiding deodorants or using gentle ones can minimize irritation.
Skin lightening topicals: Topicals containing ingredients like cysteamine can be used to gradually lighten the underarms, but results are typically quite limited.
