Acne Scar Removal Treatment

What Is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring is a consequence of the inflammatory response to acne lesions.

This causes either an irregular production of collagen, leading to acne scars; or melanin or pigment overproduction, leading to acne marks

Even though they both result from the same problem, they are treated differently and hence, a distinction should be made.

What Are Acne Scars & Acne Marks?

Acne Scars

Damage to the deeper layers of the skin during acne inflammation

Uneven skin surface, including pits, bumps, or ridges

Often permanent

May require medical treatments like laser therapy or chemical peels

Acne Marks (PIH)

Overproduction of melanin in areas of inflammation

Dark brown marks on the skin

Temporary, but can last for months or years

Often resolves on its own, but can be treated with topical creams or laser therapy

Note: Post-Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) is another type of acne mark characterized by red marks that appear after a pimple has healed. It is typically temporary and may resolve on its own.

What Causes Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring results when the skin's tissue undergoes trauma during the healing process of acne lesions.

When acne breaks the skin, the body’s natural repair mechanism works by forming new collagen fibers. If this process is disrupted or excessive, it leads to the formation of scars. If collagen formation is disrupted, this leads to atrophic (depressed) scars, whilst excessive collagen production leads to hypertrophic (raised) scars.

Factors contributing to acne scarring include the severity of acne, the time taken for acne to heal, and picking or squeezing acne lesions, which can further damage the skin.

Additionally, genetic predispositions and certain skin types are more prone to developing scars, making personalized treatment crucial in minimizing their appearance.

Choosing the right acne scar removal treatment depends on several factors, including the type and severity of your scars, your skin type, and your personal preferences. At Astria Medical Aesthetics, our doctor will conduct a thorough assessment of your skin to recommend the most suitable treatment options.  Self-diagnosis can sometimes be harmful as you may select and proceed with a treatment unsuitable for your scar type. We advise you to rely on your trusted medical professionals in recommending the best treatment for you.

While it can be challenging to completely remove acne scars, significant improvement is achievable with the right treatment. The effectiveness of scar removal varies from person to person, depending on the type of scars and the treatment method used. We will tailor each treatment plan to address your unique concerns and achieve the best possible outcome.

Acne scar treatments are designed with your comfort in mind. While some patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, it is generally well-tolerated and our team is trained to minimize any potential pain. We use advanced technology and techniques to ensure the process is as smooth and pain-free as possible.

Results may vary based on treatment type, but many individuals notice improvements after commiting to several treatments. Our experienced team will carefully assess your specific needs and develop a personalized treatment plan that outlines potential outcomes and timelines.

For acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), certain skincare ingredients can help improve its appearance. They may not be as effective as professional aesthetic treatments, and treatments tend to result in faster improvement. These ingredients include retinoids, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, AHA/BHAs and more.
For acne scars, however, skincare rarely works and it requires procedural treatments to get visible results.

Acne scar treatments are generally safe, but like any medical procedure, they may come with potential risks and side effects. These are usually mild and temporary, including redness or slight discomfort at the treatment site.
Our team is dedicated to ensuring your comfort throughout the process and will carefully discuss any concerns during your consultation.
